We have been using electricity for many year, but still now electrical power reaching our homes and factories are not perfectly safe to use. These are many due to our electrical power system during transmission and distribution is exposed to many critical conditions like under-voltage, over-voltages and voltage surges due to lightning strikes, heavy system short circuit, abrupt switching conditions. Among these issue, the major concern to everybody is sudden over-voltage condition which can cause major damage to your equipment. This leads to our today’s topic of discussion which is necessary to install a device that guarantees protection of our system and equipment from sudden over or under-voltage surges in the power system.
A surge protector, as the name suggests is a protective device that is connected to protect a system against over voltage and surges caused due to lightning strikes, heavy system short circuit, abrupt switching conditions, etc. Surge protector normally installed in transmission and distribution system into order to eliminate these surges and protect the electrical equipment against voltage transients.
Surge Protective Devices
Surge Protective Devices or SPD are used to protect the electrical system and equipment connected to it from voltage spikes or surges. Then next question will be what is a spike or surge, sudden increase or decrease in voltage level for a very short time, this will create a spike like structure if we analysis the waveform of the voltage.
Surge Protective Devices are designed to block unsafe over-voltage and divert then to earth, this will help us to limit the amplitude of the voltage to a value which is not dangerous for the electrical system and equipment connected to the system. Now-a-days we install SPD in power distribution panels, process control systems, communications systems, and other heavy-duty industrial systems, even in homes and offices for protection against voltage surges and lightning.
Surge Arrester VS Surge Protector
Surge protectors and surge arresters both are used for protecting equipment from surges.
Surge Arresters:
Surge arresters are normally used in the substations and distribution yards mainly outdoors to protect the equipment by eliminating the effects of lightning and switching over-voltages.
Surge Protectors:
Surge protector are installed in power distribution panels, process control systems, communications systems, and even in homes and offices for protection against voltage surges and lightning. It limits level of the voltage supplied to an electric equipment by either blocking or transferring higher voltage to earth in order to reduce the voltage to a safe level.
